Ahhh skincare! So as a recovering beauty product junkie, the workhorse system has worked well for me as I have paired down on my skincare products and only buy what I need! I am currently a Rouge member at Sephora (just means I spent $1000 in a year in their store 😩) and I’m actually about to lose my status because once again I have cut down my products and I’m proud of myself. My favorite brands are Youth to the People, Tatcha and Caudalie. Cutting down to workhorses only skincare allows me to get to my skincare routine instead of figuring out which product I want to use, so THANK YOU for continuing to get me together.

What brilliant marketing huh Lori!? They've given you a trophy for spending money...and you are giving back that trophy and keeping your money. I love this as a testimonial for our community. THIS is the goal! Spend less yet have MORE. I love Caudalie very much. You know in europe it's like an over-the-counter priced brand? I generally stock up when I go abroad.

As a marketing professor you are probably aware that referring to products as “clean” is meaningless as there is no clear definition. It’s just a label used by the cosmetic industry to get us to buy certain products.

Absolutely. It so meaningless I almost have to scream on behalf of the company “we are not here for clean, we are here for efficacy”.

Don’t get me started on “chemical free”

My skincare workhorses include the following: Prequel Gleanser - very moisturizing cleanser which I use after a cheap oil cleanser if I have on sunscreen, Stratia Interface moisturizer has peptides included and works for sensitive skin, Experiment Beauty Super Saturated for extra hydration, and my favorite vitamin C is Educated Mess’ Golden Hour - it is a gold stabilized vitamin C and excellent for sensitive skin.

Very intrigued by the experiment beauty super saturated. Every word of that speaks to me.

I like the data! It helps me make fast decisions. Keeps things rational in an emotional category.

Lots of good products here! I am the same I pretty much swear by a good vitamin c, sunscreen and then at night a tretinoin or retinal. Some of my faves for vitamin c are the timeless brand (on Amazon) and Medik8. For sunscreen I like Haruharu black rice sunscreen if I’m wearing makeup and I’ve been trying lately Naked Sundays tinted sunscreen and I like the texture of it a lot. I also love the Drmtlgy tinted sunscreen. One new product I’ve been experimenting with this year is the Medik8 advanced liquid peptides serum to see if I can prolong how often I get Botox and while I’m not sure I think this has been helping. It feels moisturizing and I like the texture.

I haven’t gotten Botox since September this year and feeling pretty decent and not like omg I need it stat! I normally get it twice per year but have noticed lately I need it more often. I also have various devices but do not use them often so have given up on those types of things 😂.

Lesley! You are incredible to share all of this so openly. I'm taking notes.

Timeless is a brand I'm not familiar with, per their claim it's got 10% Vitamin C. I think I'm just nervous at the affordability - like it's too good to be true. Will study more!

I'm going to hold you to not buying any more devices (and me too!) because we won't use them. Seriously, if you see me hyping a device of any sort, can you promise to call me out?

Yes I’ve read a lot about most vitamin c’s not being packaged appropriately to be effective and had come across that brand as one that was more packaged without air exposure etc but still at a lower price point! Pinkie swear on the devices hehehe 😂

My favorite skincare workhorse is a membership to Heyday - and they have FIVE locations in Atlanta! Highly highly highly recommend :) https://www.heydayskincare.com/pages/our-locations

I've been to Heyday! So this is a great example of know-thyself. I am absolutely in the minority here but I do not enjoy manicures or facials. I can handle a massage two times a year as enjoyable, any more than that and I see it as work.

I'll do a paid subscriber post (so you'll see it) but I'll write up every single service I've ever done and what I stick to and don't.

As a guy....yes, you probably know what I'm about to say.

I don't do skincare. I've tried it before but never stuck to it. Never got to use the entire tube. But the largest organ we have is skin and it, as you say, takes a beating. Let me say that I got blessed with good skin genes. My skin is soft and moist. A past masseuse told me she needed to use less coconut oil on me. My current masseuse hasn't reached that conclusion yet, so for the 12 hours afterwards, I luxuriate with the coconut oil slowly absorbing into the skin. Even woodworking leaves my hands soft.

Some of it is genetics. What I have going for me is my skin tolerates the sun (as in I don't burn) but it's really my responsibility to not ease into that too much and to help protect against the sun. It's also really important for me to model that to my young kids. I want them to think of sunscreen like they think of washing their hands - it's just something we do.

Loved this! Such a well-organized breakdown that is actually doable. Do you include any “outsourced” skin care in your annual budget - like facials, skin treatments, etc.? Sometimes I’m torn between buying quality products or just spending that money on good facials…and doing both adds up!

Expand full comment
Marina Cooley's avatar

Doing both absolutely adds up. Of course it does! I will post my outsourced items to paid subscribers. Generally anything that feels more private and vulnerable I do on the paid side. I'll list out exactly what I think is worth it and what I wouldn't spend money on again.

I tried the facial steamer a few years ago as well and on further reflection think the marketing got us there…because why would someone in Florida (or ATL) need additional face humidification?

Marina Cooley's avatar

You are right?! That was a total marketing gotcha. I live in a plume of humidity!
