Hiiii!!! This is a good one! I am also a marketing professor (SNHU) and marketing professional (Radio One) and a beauty junkie! I am now inspired to go through all of the beauty things I have purchased and see what I really use and what works. And yes I shopped the Sephora sale (I’m Rouge 😩) but I’m going to place one more order to just re up on what I actually USE. Thank you for this!!! You are my new best friend!!

I talked to a few gals after I posted this, true make-up gals, and they all stood by the Haus foundation so I am taking that to the grave. Lori - seriously, I appreciate you so much and love all our professional overlap as well as our interests. Look forward to getting to know you more on here vs IG and thank you for supporting me with subscriptions!

How do you talk about makeup with your daughter? When mine asked, I told her it just makes me feel a little more special sometimes. I don’t want to pass the YOU NEED THIS on to her, but I also recognize that makeup can be an avenue of expression! Would love to hear your thoughts as a marketing professor and makeup minimalist (which I am, too).

Betsy - I thought about your question all weekend. I added it to my future posts lists because I guess the truth is I have lot of opinions about how to pass on beauty standards to my daughter and writing about it would force some organization to the thoughts.

I don't talk about make-up or clothes or being fat or thin, I try to make our "looks" the most uninteresting thing about us. I buy her a capsule wardrobe each season (like 6 pairs of shorts and 10 t-shirts) and this has resulted in her not giving a lick about her "outfits". I'm not sure if this is my doing but she is anti-princess and has no interest in make-up, hair or nails. I guess my hope is that for as long as possible she doesn't regard her "looks" as something worth discussing and this gives her time to form an identity closer to who she is inside. So far its' going well but she's so young (almost 9), time will tell. Let's continue to explore together.

As a marketer, I know that the more confidence we have in ourselves, the harder it is to persuade us. And gosh do we talk A LOT about marketing in our household. It's like our shop talk. We talk commercials and tiktoks and my kids instantly call out when they are being sold to. They will be savvy consumers!

Great piece to read and super fun. I have been following similar routine for years and periodically cleaning that make up drawer. Thank you for reminding me about the primer!

Congratulations on pursuing your dream.

Thank you Dorota! I absolutely love my day job as a professor but with my kids getting a little older I feel able to think about special projects like this...that get me closer to my childhood dreams.

Thank you for sharing your life hacks. Do you consider it a bane or a necessity? Or both? I've always been attracted to a plain Jane. Do you use the Sephora recycling program for your emptied beauty products and toothpaste tubes? (Yes, I couldn't help myself.)

Hm, bane and necessity? I like looking nice, but I cant really say its for me because if I'm not going to see people, I would never in a million years put anything on my face other than SPF. So I suppose it's meeting expectations. To be true to myself though, I have to give this the absolute bare minimum I can get away with. 5 minutes 3 days a week. I do not do a recycling program. If I lived in Denmark, I would. I don't believe anything in the US is recycled as stated but we can leave that for another day.
